“Humanitarianism in the Age of Technology” – Open Lecture by Prof. Mark Duffield
2015-03-05 17:00:00 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
The Law Department and the Diplomatic Academy of the University of Nicosia, in cooperation with the NGO Support Centre cordially invite you to the open lecture “Humanitarianism in the Age of Technology”.
Programme:
Introduction: Dr Odysseas Christou, University of Nicosia
Speaker: Professor Mark Duffield, University of Bristol
Dr Duffield will critically explore the main trends in humanitarian action. In particular, tendencies for international aid workers to retreat from dangerous environments like Syria or Somalia while, at the same time, becoming increasingly reliant on forms of remote or arm’s length management. His work focuses on the growing use of remote satellite sensing, computer-based mapping and the mining of social media in disaster management. His lecture will give a critical overview of these important developments, as he is particularly concerned about the loss of face-to-face contact in humanitarian emergencies and its implications.
The lecture will be held in English.
