The University of Nicosia Art & Design Research Lab and the Department of Design and Multimedia are pleased to announce DADH 2023, the international conference of “Decentering art and design history: research, practice, education”, on June 15-17, 2023.<\/p>\n

The conference considers the development of art and design history in the Mediterranean region during the twentieth century. It focuses on how colonialism, postcolonialism, conflicting nationalist ideologies and western discourses of modernity have shaped: a) the development of historiography, b) the methodological and interpretative approaches, including artistic and curatorial, through which history has been written and c) the narrative forms that have been adopted for its articulation.<\/p>\n

as a place of colonial contact, conflict, population displacement and migration, the panel discussion sought to understand the effect of socio-political conditions on the writing of the history of creative practices. It raised the question of whether the histories of these practices are written via imposed colonial and post-colonial lenses, leading to adopted\/imported research methodologies. This online event sought to initiate a discussion on the writing and the making of art, design and architectural history in Cyprus, reflecting too on matters of archival research and preservation, Cultural Heritage of Lakatamia in collaboration with the Municipality of Lakatamia, Nicosia.<\/p>\n<p>An exhibition that presented works by international and Cypriot artists, which reflect, confront and re-evaluate current models of producing under the conjunction of global digital commons of knowledge. The exhibition and the wider public programme explored practices that move between the material and the digital, melding older forms of making and co-producing with current methods of fabrication and 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Unconference investigated the melding of free and open-source technologies, social art practices and the commons. These axes were interwoven in order to reflect on debates around makerspace cultures and the politics of making, on the commons in times of digital realisms and bottom-up collaborative structures, and on how we think of commoning practices in relation to social art and free technologies. In particular, the discussion addressed the possibilities of creating opportunities through the arts for bringing together migrants, refugees and host populations.
