A group of ten students from Cyprus had the singular opportunity to observe the European Parliament in action and to, subsequently, converse with a number of high-ranking European Union officials.

This was an initiative undertaken by the University of Nicosia Institute for Mass Media (IMME), in conjunction with the European Parliament Office in Cyprus; through which, 7 undergraduate journalism students of the University of Nicosia and 3 postgraduate journalism students from the Cyprus Technological University were invited to visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Students had the opportunity to attend portions of the European Parliamentary sessions, and to tour the superb audiovisual premises of the Parliament’s Communications Unit. They also met with some of the Members of the European Parliament from Cyprus, as well as several other officials. Most notably, they had an hour-long meeting with Christos Stylianides, the Cypriot Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, who gave them an overview of his portfolio and touched upon various initiatives he is spearheading in light of the ongoing refugee crisis.

The students were accompanied by George Pavlides, Director of IMME.
