ERASMUS is part of the European Union Life Long Learning Programme for co-operation in the field of education. Its purpose is to improve the quality of higher education and strengthen its European dimension. It does this by encouraging transnational cooperation between universities, fostering greater European mobility of students and teachers, and contributing to improved transparency and academic recognition of qualifications and studies throughout the European Union.
The University of Nicosia actively participates in the Erasmus programme, maintaining an Erasmus Office which provides support to a) students, to undertake recognized periods of study at partner institutions in other participating countries; and b) teachers, to organize fully integrated teaching assignments of short duration. The Office also assists in the implementation of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
Students:
As a student at the University of Nicosia, you have the opportunity to study for part of your degree in another European country.
Under ERASMUS, the University of Nicosia has student exchange agreements with various European countries from which to choose from. From your second year of study onwards, you can spend one or two semesters (academic year) studying at one of the University's partner institutions. The period abroad will be fully accredited towards your final degree and no fee from the host institution will be charged during your stay.
As an initiative to encourage student mobility, eligible students will receive a monthly ERASMUS grant of between € 400-900, depending on the host country and length of stay.
First year students: Although you are not eligible to participate in the ERASMUS programme until your second year, now is a good time to research your opportunities abroad. You can apply while in your first year for second year participation. Planning ahead is highly recommended as, for some of our partner universities, you will require a reasonable knowledge of their native language.
Teachers:
The objectives of the Erasmus Teaching Assignments are:
- To allow students who are not able to participate in a mobility scheme, to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of academic staff from higher education institutions in other European countries
- To promote exchange of expertise and experience on pedagogical methods
- To encourage higher education institutions to broaden and enrich the range and content of courses they offer
The teaching assignments may be carried out by teaching staff from higher education institutions or by invited staff from enterprises. In all cases, teachers undertaking a teaching assignment must be integrated into the department or faculty of the host institution.
The partner higher education institutions must have agreed in advance on the programme of lectures to be delivered by the visiting teachers. Where the person carrying out the assignment is from a higher education institution, the assignment must be based on an inter-institutional agreement between the home and host institution.
Administrative and (non-)teaching staff
Within the broad objective of staff training this action encompasses the following types of mobility:
- Mobility of teaching staff from a higher education institution to another higher education institution or to an enterprise, for the purpose of receiving training
- Mobility of administrative and other non-teaching staff from a higher education institution to a partner higher education institution or to an enterprise, for the purpose of receiving training.
The purpose is to allow the beneficiaries to learn by transfer of knowledge or know-how from the experiences and good practices of a partner institution or host enterprise and, thereby, to acquire practical skills relevant to their current job and their professional development. The activities can be varied: seminars, workshops, courses and conferences, periods of practical training, short secondments, and others.
